About Rita & João

We are fluent in English and Portuguese is our mother tongue.

We are Rita and João, a husband-and-wife team born and raised in the Algarve. Having lived here our entire lives, we understand both the local systems and the everyday challenges that foreigners often face when settling in Portugal.

Rita’s background is in psychology, hospitality and operations management, with years of experience helping people bring structure and clarity to complex situations. João brings experience in marketing, administration and many years serving the community as a firefighter, where calm thinking, reliability and problem-solving are essential.

Together, we created Golden Expat Assistant to provide something many expats are looking for: a trusted local point of contact who can help make life in Portugal simpler, clearer and less stressful.

We live in what is jokingly called the “centre of the universe”: São Brás de Alportel, together with our two dogs and three cats, and we’re proud to support the international community that has chosen to make the Algarve home.

Why is this name Golden?

The name “Golden” comes from our family name, Dourado, which means golden in Portuguese.

It also reflects something we value in our work: reliability, warmth and trust. Our goal is to offer support that makes life in Portugal feel simpler and more manageable.

Who Are you?

We are Rita and João, a husband-and-wife team born and raised in the Algarve.

With backgrounds in psychology, operations management, marketing and community service, we combine practical organisation with calm problem-solving.

We created Golden Expat Assistant to help foreigners navigate everyday life in Portugal with a trusted local point of contact.

How much does the service cost?

Our support packages start from €350 per month, depending on the level of assistance required.

We offer flexible monthly support based on hours, allowing you to use the time for the type of help you need: whether that’s organisation, appointments, paperwork or communication with local services.

The best way to understand what would be most helpful is through a short introductory call, where we can discuss your situation and recommend the most suitable option.

Payments can be made via bank transfer or other agreed methods.

Is this long term contract?

No. We work on a monthly basis, so there is no long-term commitment required.

Many clients choose to continue working with us because ongoing support makes life much easier, but you are free to adjust or stop the service whenever needed.

Is this service only available in the Algarve?

Our in-person support is mainly focused in the Algarve region, where we live and work.

However, many types of assistance can also be provided remotely, so we may be able to help clients in other parts of Portugal depending on the situation.

Can you help me in-person?

Yes, depending on the task and location.

Some services can be handled remotely (emails, calls, organisation, bookings), while others may require in-person assistance within the Algarve.

We simply discuss what works best for each situation.

What is off limits?

We focus on administrative, organisational and liaison support.

This means we do not provide legal, medical or financial advice, and we do not act as official representatives.

Our role is to help organise, clarify and coordinate, making things simpler while you remain fully in control.

How quickly do you respond?

We aim to respond to all messages within one working day.

Clear communication and reliability are very important to us.
